Pointless Essay free essay sample
Through the entire novel of The War of the Worlds the main theme should just stick out and be easily identified. As Martians from Mars continue to roam the Earth and cold heartedly destroy and eliminate any human activity in their presence, the people who reside in the battles and those who try and survive the bloodshed seem to be somewhat tested. The human response to all of the massacres and violent outbursts is what the author wanted to put out there so show how we would possibly react if this were to be placed in reality. The narrator in the story is focused on to show how one would give the will power and energy to progress further and see how long one would be able to last through all the horror. Blockades creating problems and having someone to try and force their way through a particular one. The Martians landing on Earth signify what the humans are to be focused on taking care of on their own by any way they choose to do so. And in this case, their goal to eliminate all human life whatsoever. The Martians are the producers of what the humans are set to overcome and fulfill their superiority over those who come in their path. Their response to the attack on their home is the whole idea of what the story is based upon. Doing whatever they can to even an extreme extent is an option they are allowed to engage in. The minor characters in the story, such as the military soldier the narrator meets up with in the middle of the story, and his wife and kids play the important role to where the main character, the narrator is objected to help with the survival of those who he interacts with and at the same time, himself. Anything the narrator decides to do portrays the way we look at his on how he is supposed to react with the survival situation that he is placed in. You can pretty much say that the secondary characters in the novel both helped and others just simply pushed the main character back even farther from what he is supposed to do. If anything, they also helped create originality for how the narrator is supposed to get through the problems he is faced upon. Overall, how the characters in the novel, such as the humans are reacting to the situations that surround them throughout the story are set to show exactly how so they can do this. And with certain barriers blockading the narrators path to even thrive in these certain predicaments of what is written to portray as items to try and push back the character in order to make him try harder and even more effectively on what he was destined to do.

Vertical Integration at Sony Essay Example
Vertical Integration at Sony Essay Example Vertical Integration at Sony Essay Vertical Integration at Sony Essay Vertical Integration Back in 2002, Sony geared themselves toward a vertical strategy as reported by Rob Weisenthal, VP and CFO of Sony Corp. of America, ââ¬Å"Under the USA umbrella, we undertook a number of vertical initiatives for each operating division. These have already produced significant operational streamlining and financial performance improvements. â⬠As discussed in his release, Weisenthal talked about Sony Pictures Entertainment and their strategy to restructure television operations, where core programming competencies were focused on. Film and television digitalization efforts have been expanded and have engineered a significant reduction in their corporate overhead. In addition, he mentionted that Sony Music has made long strides in manufacturing consolidation, overhead reduction and the huddling of international offices. Between the two sectors of operation Sony has saved an average of $125 million by integrating its operations in a vertical fasion. In addition to these vertical initiatives, under the Project USA umbrella, Sony has begun a set of horizontal initiatives across the operating companies that will result in the creation of several shared platforms. Each of our divisions will share in the scale economics for all common services. These platforms include (2002): Logistics: The logistics platform will enable integrated supply chain management. All operating divisions are working towards greater consolidation of manufacturing, distribution, and transportation operations. Purchasing: The purchasing platform will increase buying power through joint purchasing contracts. This initiative has already resulted in significant savings in expenses related to travel, part-time personnel, usage of external consultants and legal fees. Media-Buying: With respect to media buying, Sony consolidated media planning and spending dollars of U. S. and Canadian operations for Electronics, Music, and Pictures divisions with Universal-McCann. Savings amounted to $20 million in this fiscal year alone (2002-2003). IT Infrastructure: And finally, Sony is the midst of consolidating our IT infrastructure (including Data centers, voice and data networks, and Web infrastructure) to increase the operating efficiency and utilization of our systems. Project USA will be largely completed by the end of this fiscal year (2003), both the vertical initiatives and the creation of these shared service platforms. The project is on course to lead us to meaningful margin enhancement and increased operating efficiencies across our divisions. Overall, we anticipate over $400 million of annualized savings from the overall project including the initiatives at Electronics. We began generating savings this past fiscal year and it will take three years for the full impact to kick in,â⬠Weisenthal reported. Surprisingly, after extensive research it was found that, more currently, Sony is taking small steps to flatten out their supply chain with a horizontally integrating strategy. According to an article titled, Sonys semi biz to pivot from vertical to horizontal, written by Yoshiko Hara at Electronics Supply Manufacturing, Sony Corporation ââ¬Å"is steering its semiconductor business from vertically integrated operation to ââ¬Ëfab-liteââ¬â¢ operation that would involve outsourcing production of the Cell processor. This move is a significant turnaround from Sonys previous strategy to develop and manufacture core chips internally. Well invest in semiconductors on an asset-lite policy, which puts much weight on the investment efficiency, said Yutaka Nakagawa, executive deputy president of Sony in charge of the semiconductor business. Well focus more on the competitive areas. It seems that this tactical approach is meant for the short run, and lacks the vision needed for long term sustainability. Sony used to plan, design, manufacture and implement processors in its own game machines, including the PlayStation line; Sony used to have great success with its game processors due to its vertical structure but now the future is uncertain. Future Vertical Integration According to the article, Sonys semi biz to pivot from vertical to horizontal, Sony plans to keep its research and development teams running strong, but will outsource key manufacturing processes. Even if outsourced, game processors will continue to be one of Sonys main semiconductor products. The company intends to boost all the investment on Cell processor from the game business. Sony has invested a total of 460 billion yen (about $3. 8 billion) on semiconductors over a three-year period. Of this amount, 200 billion yen ($1. 7 billion) was spent on the Cell processor. In the coming three-year mid-term period beginning next April, We are considering decreasing investment in semiconductors greatly, Nakagawa said. Under the new policy, Sony intends to focus on three areas- imagers, game LSIs and system-on-chip LSIs for audio/video devices. Sony has about 60 percent market share in the imager market and is now reinforcing CMOS sensors as well. One hundred and fifty engineers were shifted to the imager section from audio/video sections to boost development. In the audio/video area, system-on-chip LSIs for TVs and Blu-ray Disc next-generation DVD products will be reinforced, but non-profitable chips such as GPS-integrated chips will be discontinued. Sonys semiconductor sales are expected to increase by 57 percent from 490 billion yen ($4. 1 billion) to 770 billion yen ($6. billion) next fiscal year, ending March, owing to the demand from game consoles and sales of imagers. About 70 percent of its sales are for its own products and 30 percent of the sales come from the merchant market. Sonys semiconductor business had been losing money before turning to the black (positive) in the October through December period of 2007. Nakagawa intends to keep the business in the black and moving forward while providing the highest level s of quality products and customer service. Difference Between inure and enure
Difference Between inure and enure Difference Between ââ¬Å"inureâ⬠and ââ¬Å"enureâ⬠Difference Between ââ¬Å"inureâ⬠and ââ¬Å"enureâ⬠By Maeve Maddox inure: To bring (a person, etc.) by use, habit, or continual exercise to a certain condition or state of mind, to the endurance of a certain condition For example: Emergency room personnel become inured to the sight of blood. Scientists working in Antarctica become inured to the cold. Teachers in schools with weak principals become inured to indignities. enure: (legal term) to come into operation; to take place, have effect; to be available; to be applied (to the use or benefit of a person) For example, The new tax will enure to the benefit of all the inhabitants of Madison County. These examples from the web indicate that inure for habituate has become the most common spelling on both sides of the Atlantic: WE MUST NOT BECOME INURED TO YOUTH GUN VIOLENCE (The Boston Globe) Germans become inured to violence against foreigners (The Independent) Are we becoming inured to civil service carelessness? (The Telegraph) How Inured to Mass Shootings Have We Become? (The Huffington Post) Film audiences have long become inured to elderly actors being paired off with barely post-pubescent females. (The Guardian) In older printed works, the spellings inure and enure occur frequently with either meaning. Both the OED and Merriam-Webster offer enure as a variant spelling, but modern usage seems to favor inure for the sense of ââ¬Å"habituate.â⬠It may be useful to reserve the spelling enure for the legal term. Wordnik offers examples of the uses of enure and inure. Want to improve your English in five minutes a day? Get a subscription and start receiving our writing tips and exercises daily! Keep learning! Socrates View on Freud's Civilization and Its Discontents Term Paper
Socrates View on Freud's Civilization and Its Discontents - Term Paper Example In dealing with the reality, it may have become typical for the ego of a man to necessitate separating itself from the harsh truth of real inevitable circumstances, yet Freud must add that it is also through having a sense of genuine community, or of acknowledging the value of socialization and the distinct characteristic of companionship that would help resolve the alienating trait of the ego. To some extent, Freud may be met more than halfway in his claim that ego bears the counter potential of developing for itself an attribute which would make it become capable of securing happiness and fulfillment later on. This is the point where he provides adequate discourse of civilization and the tensions associated with the inner struggle of each individual to cope with its influence. However, Freud appears to draw inference at reducing this effort on arguing that the purpose of life executes fundamentally around the pleasure principle, designating projected human ends to a rather limited cause of shifting out of the cycle of consuming displeasure. It would have been better if, in the process of finding settlement with happiness and trying to rid oneself of suffering, highest human goal attainable which transcends discontents in the material world emerges in realization. He could have accounted for the possibility of going beyond the perception of pleasure as deeply embedded in every conscious faculty having the concern of gratifying the need to drive away incompetence. To Freud, it occurs that the ego assumes the chief role or is central in directing response as a human being attempts to explore various strategies by which to adapt to the environment in possession of elements of discontent to which an individual reacts to ascertain how particular circumstances can be worked to acquire the favor of securing contentment. In fairness though, ââ¬ËCivilization and Its Discontentsââ¬â¢ signifies what Freud considers as a religious sentiment, brought about by an â⠬Ëoceanic feelingââ¬â¢ of wholeness, eternity, and limitlessness as if in a pure state of bliss. He elaborates nevertheless that such is of pathological origins which dissolve the boundary between ego and object of pleasure so that once this is achieved, one is led to a religious degree of relief with cares thrown away due to detachment of inclination to materialism which creates suffering from human weakness often predisposed to sexual desires and violent mode of aggression conventionally against figures of prominence. Freudian concept of ââ¬Ëcivilizationââ¬â¢ refers to a man-made entity embodying materialization of human ideals that may eventually address proper gratification of instincts as well as serve to stimulate intellectual functions in order for the ego to manage its own foundation of placing balance between the ââ¬ËIdââ¬â¢ and the ââ¬ËSuperegoââ¬â¢. This is not significantly different from establishing a form of democracy which initially sustains mea sure of freedom and revolution desired by people yet this same democracy spontaneously guides the behavior of the latter to threats of evolving tyranny and disorder which are altogether unfavorable to the nation.

Internal Communication between Managers and Employees Research Paper - 1
Internal Communication between Managers and Employees - Research Paper Example The study will be concluding with recommendations and conclusions for these employers that should be taken into consideration while dealing with the three factors. The procedure of collection of the data followed by its analysis and interpretation of the result while finding a solution to any research problem is known as the research philosophy. It mainly comprises of two approaches. One is the positivism and the other is interpretive. The positivist style gives establishing theory prior to the research conduct. This type of research can be carried out by means of experimental and descriptive research method. It is positively associated with the natural sciences. On the other hand, interpretive gives the establishing theory after conducting the research. The interpretive research model works on the basis of the human perceptions. It helps to understand mainly the nonstatistical variables like the human perceptions, their social behavior, social motives etc. In this research, the inte rpretive research model has been chosen for finding out the internal communication between the managers and the employees, the strategy of the company in developing the brand and the expansion strategy of the company in marketing its products. The two main types of research strategies are qualitative and quantitative research strategies. Both qualitative and quantitative research strategies hold equal importance while finding a solution to any research problem. Quantitative research strategy involves various statistical calculations, different computational techniques, and procedures. It mainly considers close ended surveys. A qualitative research strategy is just the opposite of quantitative research strategy. It gives the description of the individuals in the natural situation and tries to find solutions to the research.
